Prompt - We all know the Lord of the Rings movies are some of the greatest films of all time. Which is your favorite and why?
Mine is Fellowship for sure. Something about the vibe of starting off the journey, the music, beautiful vistas of the Shire - it all just hits. Return of the King comes close though, gotta love the sheer scale of the capper. The first one has the most Bilbo though, and he's always been my favorite character, so he's taking it home.
I adore the LOTR movies even if I can't keep track of the names of all the good vs bad people and characters. The Fellowship is also my favorite, but my favorite scenes come from the other two--it turns out I'm an absolute sucker for the good guys making a cinematic appearance at the top of the hill at the crucial part of a battle. Gets me every single time.
This was a hilarious thought-exercise, putting Sauron in the role of sports coach. Favorite line: "We do not care."
I had trouble keeping track when they were first coming out too, especially cause the hobbits looked so similar to my young eyes. If the characters confuse you that just means it's time for another rewatch. Eventually you'll get them down. Nothing wrong with loving a good hill arrival!
Thanks for reading and the support! The coach it's modeled after is actually Mike Tomlin, known for his press conference one-liners. Here he is delivering that one:
Oh, I should've been clearer: I 1000% know the names of individual characters, it's all the groups of characters (the people of such and such land, etc) whose names I can't keep track of. Not that you need me to clarify, it's just one of my favorite trilogies--can't count how many times I've watched or listened to or read them--and out of loyalty to it and my reputation I HAD to clarify ;-)
Haha clarification is good! Far be it from me to inadvertently besmirch your LOTR credentials. I'm rushing a clarification to everyone who could've possibly read the OG comment chain and gotten the wrong impression posthaste.
As a LOTR fan, I really enjoyed this. Thanks for this Rick!
Man, it's hard to choose 1 film as my favourite. I really think they all have a unique flavour. I even like the Hobbit films, although there are some people who don't for some reason (maybe it's the CGI...)
Glad you liked it! I agree each one has its own flavor. I will say, I was a bit disappointed by the Hobbit films. I was soooo excited for them to come out because that's the first fantasy book I ever read, I still re-read it once every other year or so.
I followed the production of the films diligently, the new high-end 48 fps cameras they were using at the time, etc. But I ended up not really jiving with the final product. I could list out reasons but in the end, I just felt like some magic of it was lost. Perhaps these films were the beginning of my general disillusionment...
(nah, I think I was already on that road before them)
